Summary

Can you follow your heart when it’s already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte。 The Eastoffe family’s affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she’s found。

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch。 The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king—but only with Hollis’s help。 Can a girl who’s lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?

This book is a major disappointment。 Flat characters, uninteresting plot, completely predictable and overly melodramatic。 Only reason it’s not a one star is that it wasn’t full of grammatical errors。 I was so excited Kiera Cass had new work out that I preordered the first one。 It too was disappointing, but ended well。 I had hopes this one would pick up at that level of writing, so once again, preordered it。 Instead, while it picked up at the same point in the story (and treated us to a seemingly This book is a major disappointment。 Flat characters, uninteresting plot, completely predictable and overly melodramatic。 Only reason it’s not a one star is that it wasn’t full of grammatical errors。 I was so excited Kiera Cass had new work out that I preordered the first one。 It too was disappointing, but ended well。 I had hopes this one would pick up at that level of writing, so once again, preordered it。 Instead, while it picked up at the same point in the story (and treated us to a seemingly endless carriage ride to kick off the book), the intensity never came back。 Hard to believe this is the same author that gave us the creative and politically innovative Selection series。 Again, a major disappointment。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this book。 This book was everything I wanted when I heard Kiera Cass was releasing The Betrothed and more。 I really feel like this was the story she wanted to tell and The Betrothed was just the necessary set-up to get here。 The issues I had with the first book (the pacing and insta-love) were completely gone in this one。 This book kept making me want to continue reading in the same way The Selection series did

I must say, in the beginning I found the book a bit slow and therefore it pulled me a little less than the Betrothed, but of course I kept reading! Eventually the ball started to roll and it slowly became more difficult to put the book down。 Hollis is gradually becoming more confident and that personality growth is nice to see。 I also think there is a lot more action in this book than in the first book。 There is some humor in the book to make it a little more lighthearted。Hollis makes a long journey from The Betrothed to the end of The Betrayed and learns how high the price of love can be sometimes。 。。。more

The last third of the book was amazing, the rest funny and like the betrothed

Grace

Only the last third was good。 First 2/3 were as bad as the betrothed

This is not the Kiera Cass of The Selection。 The Betrothed felt like the longest exposition ever, so I held out hope that the series would develop some depth。 No such luck。 The plot is predictable and weakly developed, the characters are flat, and the writing is stilted。 The whole story feels like an inexperienced and immature attempt at YA fantasy。

Keira Cass does it once again and this book is so amazing

The problem with duologies / trilogies is that the authors often presume we remember every bit of the first book。 Well, I did not with this one, since I read The Betrothed over a year ago, and I wish there had been some kind of refresher。 Hollis was previously engaged to the future king of Coroa, but ran away to instead marry a regular guy, Silas。 At the end of The Betrothed, there is a massacre at her wedding, and Silas and all Hollis' family is killed。 In this book, she's on the run with the f The problem with duologies / trilogies is that the authors often presume we remember every bit of the first book。 Well, I did not with this one, since I read The Betrothed over a year ago, and I wish there had been some kind of refresher。 Hollis was previously engaged to the future king of Coroa, but ran away to instead marry a regular guy, Silas。 At the end of The Betrothed, there is a massacre at her wedding, and Silas and all Hollis' family is killed。 In this book, she's on the run with the few remaining members of Silas' family, as they try to incite a revolution。 This was a quick, frothy read, and while I struggled to remember pieces of the first book, I still enjoyed it。 I think the duology would probably be much better if you read them back to back。 。。。more

The Betrayed is the second book in the The Betrothed series。 This has been an enjoyable series so far with interesting characters。 I am not sure if there is going to be another book in the series but this one left the series in a good place to continue。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ok I actually really liked this book and I was surprised because I hated the first one。 I love how she ended up with Etan bc I literally fell in love with him through the pages but it did kinda weird me out how she falls for her dead husband’s cousin。 I think a lot of the things that happened were very abrupt and unrealistic and that has been a pattern throughout the series but I did enjoy the plot so that’s that。 Sorry this review is all over the place。

1st Read: ★★★That was a massive improvement from the last book。 Oh, my word。 I still have many critiques, but overall, a vast improvement。 Now onto the issues。 First, everyone needed to chill on the tears。 It seemed like people were crying, either tears of sadness or joy, at least twice a chapter。 That really got on my nerves。 Her writing is just not up my alley anymore。 I still love the Selection, and while there are problems with the composition and writing, I still love that series。 I could s 1st Read: ★★★That was a massive improvement from the last book。 Oh, my word。 I still have many critiques, but overall, a vast improvement。 Now onto the issues。 First, everyone needed to chill on the tears。 It seemed like people were crying, either tears of sadness or joy, at least twice a chapter。 That really got on my nerves。 Her writing is just not up my alley anymore。 I still love the Selection, and while there are problems with the composition and writing, I still love that series。 I could see 13-year old me absolutely loving this series, and in that regard, it is definitely for younger audiences。 I've just moved on to more mature writing。 Now, what was good about the book。 I liked that there seemed to be a direction right from page one。 Was the ending predictable? Yes。 Did I wish that there was an epilogue? Absolutely。 I liked the romance much more in this book。 I felt like there was more chemistry and history between the characters。 The romance was angsty towards the end and I was on the edge of my seat, screaming at the characters the answer that was so obvious to me (I was right, by the way)。 But for YA readers who are "phasing out" of the YA genre, this series is definitely not for you。 。。。more

OMG, what on earth happened? If Cass had just summarized book one into about 25-30 pages and tacked it to this one, she would have had a dynamite story without that Betrothed mar on her record。 This story was SO much better than the first one in the duology, much more reminiscent of the quality of her Selection series。 Nevertheless, I don't think I'll ever be able to get my teenage daughter to read her books again。。。 she absolutely hated Betrothed and never finished it。 Sad。 WORTH A READ, REALLY OMG, what on earth happened? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow。 WOW!5/5 StarsI loved this。 Straight to my ‘favourites’ shelf。 Where should I even start。 I loved Hollis and Scarlet’s relationship in this book。 They were friends in the last book, yeah, but you can really see them becoming sisters in this one。 Not only that, but in the last book Hollis was so reserved and was such a lady, poised, silent, but in this book there was so much character development。 I mean, she became a warrior queen by the end! And she thought that she couldn’t do it。 *eyeroll Wow。 WOW!5/5 StarsI loved this。 Straight to my ‘favourites’ shelf。 Where should I even start。 I loved Hollis and Scarlet’s relationship in this book。 They were friends in the last book, yeah, but you can really see them becoming sisters in this one。 Not only that, but in the last book Hollis was so reserved and was such a lady, poised, silent, but in this book there was so much character development。 I mean, she became a warrior queen by the end! And she thought that she couldn’t do it。 *eyeroll* Honestly, the only thing that I’ll have a mini rant about is that Hollis just jumps around between men。 I’m sorry, but honestly。 I mean she was engaged to the KING, and I know, even though he didn’t really want her as his wife for anything other than a pretty face, I feel like if she would have stayed with him, he would have been ok to her… but maybe not seeing as he MURDERED HER HUSBAND(!!!)。 But then she jumped to Silas, who I honestly think was perfect for her。 They were so cute。 But then like a week… A WEEK after Silas’s death, she starts thinking, hmm, Ethan is cute。 NO ETAN IS NOT CUTE YOU SHOULD BE IN MOURNING! 😒😒But by the end, I was totally all team Hollis and Etan。 But just to add some more drama (lol), I honestly think that Silas is still alive。 Either he was taken, or he ran, or something。 But in all of Scarlet’s flash-backs, she never said anything about seeing Silas’s body, only Sullivan, her father and her younger brother, Saul。 Never Silas though。I don't know, maybe I am just hoping that if we get another book (even though it’s a duology, I’m still crossing my fingers, lol), Silas might be in it。 I really liked him with Hollis, more than the other two love interests, personally。 Anyways, I liked the first book, but I LOVED this one。 Also, I read the whole thing in like, one sitting so。。。5/5 Stars。 。。。more
